All the Worlds’ Futures: The Venice Biennale

The 56th International Art Exhibition swung open its doors to the public on Saturday 9th May claiming instantaneous attention. Countless waves of art enthusiasts flocked to the contemporary art exhibition situated in various locations around the beautiful city of Venice. All to witness the exquisite exhibitions, exceptionally crafted by an amalgamation of 89 participating countries.

Founded in 1895, the exhibition now claims the remarkable age of 120. Capturing countless creative minds around the world once every 2 years, the popularity of the infamous exhibition appears to mature with age, as year on year additional countries eagerly participate.

The theme “All the World’s Futures” has clearly manufactured some inspiring and thought-provoking ideas, as the world witnessed the revelation of eagerly awaited exhibits. From the vast amount of stunning displays, we've compiled a (watered-down) collection of some of our much loved favourites.

Extravagantly constructed in the Japanese Pavilion, Chiharu Shiota’s “The Key in the Hand” project draws in spectators with mass admiration. The collection 50,000 keys dangling from an enormous tangled web of red yarn are suggested to represent the notion of memory.

Patricia Cronin’s exhibit “shrine for girls” strives to remember the repressed and pay homage to females around the world facing violence.

This suggestive sculpture is just one of an array crafted by Sarah Lucas featured in the British pavilion. The accommodating room is covered with sunny yellow with the intention of “bringing strangeness into the sunny light of day”.

The work of Céleste Boursier-Mougenot is situated in the French pavilion unexpectedly presenting a kinetic forest. A mesmerising tree moves about in the clean open space with the innovative assistance of a low-voltage electrical current. Envisioned as a place for reflection and retreat, a semicircle of surrounding steps accommodates tiring spectators.

Artist Antonio Manuel displays his work ‘Occupations/Discoveries’ in the Brazilian Pavilion. The brick wall, cement and paint installation encourages participation from spectators as they climb through the punched out walls.

THE PERFECT PANCAKE RECIPE

Here at Ruby+Ed it's more than likely that our new years diets will be thrown out the window this Pancake Day. That's why we've found the perfect recipe to make your favourite treat. Opt for yummy peanut butter and melted chocolate, or a pile of summer fruits as toppings - whatever takes your fancy! Why not get everyone involved, and make sure you don't get your Ruby+Ed slippers dirty!

(Pintrest)
What you'll need:

100g plain flour
2 eggs
300ml semi-skimmed milk
1 tbsp sunflower oil or vegetable, plus extra for frying
pinch salt

How to do it:

Blending in the flour: Put the flour and a pinch of salt into a large mixing bowl and make a well in the centre. Crack the eggs into the middle, then pour in about 50ml milk and 1 tbsp oil. Start whisking from the centre, gradually drawing the flour into the eggs, milk and oil.

Once all the flour is incorporated, beat until you have a smooth, thick paste. Add a little more milk if it is too stiff to beat.Finishing the batter: Add a good splash of milk and whisk to loosen the thick batter. While still whisking, pour in a steady stream of the remaining milk. Continue pouring and whisking until you have a batter that is the consistency of slightly thick single cream. Traditionally, people would say to now leave the batter for 30 mins, to allow the starch in the flour to swell, but there’s no need.

Getting the right thickness: Heat the pan over a moderate heat, then wipe it with oiled kitchen paper. Ladle some batter into the pan, tilting the pan to move the mixture around for a thin and even layer. Quickly pour any excess batter into a jug, return the pan to the heat, then leave to cook, undisturbed, for about 30 secs. Pour the excess batter from the jug back into the mixing bowl. If the pan is the right temperature, the pancake should turn golden underneath after about 30 secs and will be ready to turn.

Flipping pancakes: Hold the pan handle, ease a fish slice under the pancake, then quickly lift and flip it over. Make sure the pancake is lying flat against base of the pan with no folds, then cook for another 30 secs before turning out onto a warm plate. Continue with the rest of the batter, serving them as you cook or stack onto a plate. You can freeze the pancakes for 1 month, wrapped in cling film or make them up to a day ahead.

Happy Pancake Day for tomorrow!

Don't forget our sale is still on and there may be even further discounts on their way...

How did your pancakes turn out? Show us!

Lots of love,

VALENTINES DAY GUIDE

Leaving it a little last minute? Don't worry - the Ruby+Ed team have compiled a list of the top five things to do this Valentines day which will make your day extra special including the perfect Ruby+Ed pieces to match the day.

1. The Flower Shop, London.

We think this is a really wonderful idea, instead of nipping to your local corner shop for those cliche roses which we all know won't last very long - why not create your own personal bouquet together? Head down to BoxPark in Shoreditch where you can buy a perfectly prepared bouquet, or your own couple's custom combination. Even more exciting - on Sunday 15th February, the pop-up will host a wreath-making workshop from 11am to 12pm. See more details here. Not sure what to wear? Create a casual day look with our bark wild wolf parka- now just £137.50 in our sale!

2. The Candlelight Club- 1920s Valentines Day Ball

Fancy adding a little mystery to your Saturday night or do you both like to party in style? In a secret london location, this pop up party will be full of dancing, cocktails, and some very snazzy champagne. Remember, you can be single too! To book your place and get in on the secret see here.
Add Ruby+Ed's popular husky fur long coat to create the ultimate 1920's look!

3. Cooking For Couples

Do you both love cooking? Instead of heading to your favourite restaurant for that classic valentines feast, why not create your own with some of the best chefs in town. You'll learn to prepare a variety of sumptuous foods that'll get your taste buds tingling. From Rockefeller Oysters or seafood terrine, seabass with bisque sauce and dauphinois potatoes and Knickerbocker Glory, before taking the whole lot home with them for dinner. Book your place now. Don't forget to pop on a pair of luxury slippers when you get home and help your feet recover.

4. Stay in

Don't fancy leaving the house this Saturday night? Why not settle in to watch a romantic movie. You can't go wrong with Pretty Woman. (Available to watch on Netflix specially). Cosy up in your Ruby+Ed faux fur slippers and matching hot water bottle cover by the fire.

5. Romantic dinner cruise

Why not sit back and be wined and dined in style? A three hour long trip, you'll enjoy a three course dinner and can dance away to a live band as you float along the Thames. Certainly one of our favourites! Why not glam up and add a luxury faux fur accessory or jacket over your dress.

Still haven't bought them a gift? Don't miss out on great discounts, and order next day delivery to make sure they aren't left disappointed!

We hope you have a lovely Valentine's day. What did you get up to? Did you recieve Ruby+Ed?
